The part where we stop talking.
Most of this site is us selling you something. This page is the plain version: what a session with us actually involves, start to finish, and why families end up putting the pictures on a wall instead of a phone.
One — the planning call
We ask about your walls before we ask about your camera.
Before anything is booked we talk. Who is in the photographs, how old they are, what they are like at four in the afternoon, and which room in your house has the empty wall. That last question sounds odd on a call about photography, but it decides most of what follows — whether we shoot in the studio at Epping or somewhere across Sydney, whether we work vertical or wide, and how many people we need to fit in the frame.
Sessions book four to six weeks ahead, so the call usually happens well before the day. Newborn families should get in touch between twenty-eight and thirty-four weeks and reserve by due-date month; we photograph at five to fourteen days old.
Two — the session
Ninety minutes, and nobody is told to smile.
The session fee is $395 and covers up to ninety minutes, in the studio or on location. What happens inside that time is mostly not photography. Toddlers get to run out the first ten minutes. Older kids get asked about something other than school. Parents who have told us they hate being photographed get put in the frame early, before the dread builds, and it is over before they have decided how to stand.
Newborn sessions run longer — two to three hours, in a heated studio, with a spotter on every posed shot and as many feeds and settles as the baby wants. Partners and siblings are welcome and usually needed. If you are booking in the Northern Beaches, the Inner West, the Shire, the Hills, Ryde, Hornsby, Eastwood or the North Shore, we come to you.
Three — the reveal
You see them big, before you decide anything.
Two to three weeks after the session we sit down together and put the photographs on a wall at the size they would actually be printed — 20×24, 30×40, 40×50 inches. This is the part people are not expecting. A photograph you liked on a screen and a photograph at forty inches across the room are not the same photograph, and almost everyone changes their mind about their favourite at least once.
You choose there, with us in the room, and nothing is ordered until you have. We will give you a firm date for production at your reveal, once we know what you have chosen.
Why the wall
A folder nobody opens is not a photograph.
Nearly every family who walks in has thousands of pictures of their children and none on display. The phone fills up, the good ones sink, and the year the kids were small becomes a scroll nobody reaches the end of. A framed print does the one thing a file cannot: it is seen, without anyone choosing to look.
